This is the begining of a series of my special picks of antique fishing lures being showcased on this blog every week. This is a Welch & Graves Glass Minnow Tube that was patented in 1893. This ancient work of art and design was designed to hold a live minnow while trolling it through the water. I guess the concept was that one would not have to place a hook in the bait and kill it. It is beyond my imagination how this large glass object being drug through the water would not scare the fish to the opposite end of the lake! But nonetheless, it is a very fascinating idea and early fishing lure invention and a personal favorite of mine. I am also pretty sure that the survival rate of a glass object being drug across lake and river bottoms of rock and pebble was not very high either.
